Matelasse is a French fabric that is quilted in a way that looks padded though it’s not. This type of fabric comes from the south of France in the Provence area. Originally used as quilts and coverlets, matelasse patterns can now be found on pillows as well as other woven fabrics.
Matelasse is a French word that means quilted. True matelasse fabric is hand quilted with floral patterns. The treads used for the quilting are done in the same color as the fabric so that the pattern is what you see rather than the stitches. Matelasse quilts and pillows can be solid white or colored fabrics. White and off white matelasse is perhaps the most common. White and cream matelasse is perfect for a shabby chic or French country inspired bedroom.
Because matelasse is typical for quilts and coverlets this fabric is most often associated with the bedroom. It’s floral and leaf patterns can be copied onto other fabrics like jacquards that are woven to imitate the hand stitched patterns of matelasse. These jacquards can be used for curtains and upholstery fabrics where quilted fabrics might be too thick. The matelasse pattern can also be copied onto area rugs with the pile cut to imitate the raised quilting of the original fabric. These area rugs can be used throughout the home including the living room and dining room as well as the bedroom.
Matelasse can add luxurious texture and pattern to a bed whether or not it is done in a color or patterned fabric.
